Quick Reference Guide to IPAA Registries

<>Foundation Stock: IPAA’s breeding book or designated foundation blood ancestors (foundation stock) are the Appaloosas registered prior to 1971 with Appaloosa Horse Club of Canada or Appaloosa Horse Club. Specifically, this includes ApHCC regular registration numbers of 5,141 and below and ApHC registrations with an “F” or “#” prefix and 139,999 and below. All of those horses are considered 100% foundation blood stock. ApHC registration numbers 139,999 and below that have a “T” prefix are 100% foundation blood stock if both parents are registered Appaloosas and 50% if one or both parents are unknown, unregistered, or a registered breed other than Appaloosa. Numbers 139,999 and below that are preceded by any of the other prefixes used by the ApHC (PC, ID, B, etc.) and any number 5,141 or below for the ApHCC that has a prefix will be considered by their ancestors and will count as registered Appaloosas. A horse registered with ApHC and having a registration number in that blood stock group that is preceded by an ID but has no recorded parents is 0% Foundation blood but does count as a generation of registered Appaloosa.

Generations: Generations include the subject horse for IPAA, as the horse is part of the whole dynamic! A horse who has all of its parents and grandparents registered with Appaloosa registries but not all of its great-grandparents is an F3 for IPAA registration purposes.
